MAKAR SANKRANTI
Makar Sankramanam or Makar Sankranti is the time when the sun appears to start moving in the northwards direction. Hence the coming six months are called Uttarayana. This period is very auspicious for our health.
The year is divided into two parts Dakshinayana and Uttarayana. Ayana is the Sanskrit word for path. Here we refer to the path of Sun. Dakshina is south and Uttara is North. In Dakshinayana we see the sun traveling southwards whereas in Uttarayana we see the sun traveling northwards.
Ayurvedic Sages have keenly observed the effect of the direction of the movement of the Sun. The intensity of the Sunrays is more intense in Uttarayana and it starts gradually increasing from January till June. From June the intensity of the sunrays starts reducing and is at its low till 14-15 January.
The Dakshinayana is also referred to as VisargaKala, Visarga is to give away, kala is period, in other words it is a period in which the climate is such that the nature seems to give strength to our bodies.
The Uttarayana is also referred to as Adankala, Adana is to take away and kala is period, in other words in Uttarayana the climate is such that in this period the nature takes away all the strength from our bodies and as a result our bodies become vulnerable for the attack of diseases. This is the time when we have to take care of our health.
Makar Sankranti is a festival designed to mark the importance of health care.
We take this opportunity to wish you best of your health through out the year!
